Recent additions:
The Board of NZSSSC is delighted to announce the new Executive Director of New Zealand Secondary Schools Sports Council is Mr Garry Carnachan.
Mr Carnachan taught Mathematics at Queen Elizabeth College in Palmerston North and had extensive teaching and senior management experience at Opunake High School and Spotswood College in Taranaki. He was Principal of Opunake High School in 2000 and 2001 before taking a position as Professional Development Manager and, later, Team Manager for the Hurricanes Super 12/Super 14 Franchise.
In 2007 he was appointed Team Manager for the Junior All Blacks. He has also been a Board Member for the New Plymouth Oilers National Basketball League Team.
Garry Carnachan will take over from Peter Sharp at the start of Term 3.
The facility to manage the school's sports programme within MUSAC's Classroom Manager AND to produce the NZSSSC Census report is now available.
Sports Co-ordinators in schools that use MUSAC are advised that they should seriously consider delaying using SportSCID until they assess what MUSAC can offer. SportSCID2008 is still available [below] but we are convinced that the MUSAC option will be better for most sports co-ordinators' needs.
I have produced a 'getting started' manual for sports co-ordinators. This has been sent out to all who have attended any of the training workshops that have been conducted and an updated version is available here. The additions to the first version are a footnote on page 2, a new page 7 and an Appendix. They are identified by a line down the left margin. Download here - it is a .pdf format file that is 2,643 KB.
MUSAC Manual Update 1 April
Some schools will ask students to register for all of their sports at the start of the season, or even the start of the year. They will then want to be able to take a student and allocate all of the sports choices for that student. This is not possible directly in MUSAC but it can be easily managed by using MUSAC & SportSCID together. The instructions are here:
MUSAC & SportSCID: Instructions for allocating sports to students as distinct from allocating students to sports.
SportSCID2008, SportSCID2008Practice and the updated manual are available for downloading.
Please select the item you want to download [you should take all but it's up to you in which order you do it]; right click on mouse; select 'save target as' or 'save link as'; select a name and location and save each file to your computer.

We are delighted to be involved with Srito in the development of the Professional Development System [PDS] for school sports co-ordinators. The NZSSSC Strategic Plan 2006 - 2009 has a key initiative " to assist SPARC to provide training and support for all secondary school sports co-ordinators"; we had worked with SPARC in the production of their Sportfit - NZ Secondary Schools Sports Co-ordinator's Manual and it was perfect timing for Sfrito to suggest that we might work towards the next stage and formalise the training and support of sports co-ordinators.Sfrito personnel worked really hard to get their heads around the complexity of the widely varying roles of the people employed to co-ordinate sports programmes in secondary schools and of the vast range of tasks that each person is expected to perform. Sfrito identified the skill sets that are required and their expertise allowed these to be sorted into a complicated but coherent format that would be the base of the training. They then progressed the project at an amazing speed - it staggers me that the first of the excellent PDS resources have been delivered to the 47 sports co-ordinators who registered for Phase One only sixteen months after the project was mooted. Since then, Phase Two has been introduced with a further 35 sports co-ordinators registered. The success of the PDS project will be determined by an assessment of whether or not sports co-ordinators in schools believe this is something that they want to be involved in and, once involved, whether or not the trainees and their schools believe that PDS helps them better to do their jobs. We are confident on both counts.
If you want to be involved or to find out more about PDS contact your Regional Secondary Schools Sports Director or check out the Sfrito website.

The website has been developed by ACC and offers free advice for people who are keen on running, walking, cycling, netball, snowboarding, skiing and soccer.
It’s aimed at everyday New Zealanders who want to keep fit, but are at a bit of a loss when it comes to things like training, proper nutrition and safety techniques.
The website is partnered by SPARC, Ministry of Health, the Heart Foundation and the Cancer Society.
The website was launched on 29 March 2007.

In consultation with NZEI, NZSSSC has prepared a series of exemplars of job descriptions with an explanatory statement. The remuneration in the exemplars have been updated to include the settlement that includes a 4% pay increase effective from January 2, 2008. This is still to be approved by NZEI members.
We will update any changes as soon as we are advised of confirmation. Until then the settlement rates from 02/01/2008 are copied.
